From 1900 to 2015, around 3,000,000 whales were removed from our oceans by whalers; causing great whale populations to plummet by around 66 to 90 per cent.
Little did we know the importance of these great whales as we face the impacts of climate change today, or we may have acted differently.
As ecosystem engineers, whales can modify the environment around them and provide important services we rely upon. These ocean giants influence:
· Global carbon storage
· The health of commercial fisheries
· The functioning of the oceans, buffering marine ecosystems from stresses such as climate change
